The Fast That I Choose: To Loose the Bonds of Injustice
This meditation is based on a passage for February 8, 2011 in the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).
Text: Isaiah 58:1-12
Reflection and Question: I have friends who have followed the directives of this passage to the letter, even to the taking of the homeless poor into their house. I couldn’t do that. I have tried recently to fast from paying attention to professional sports, but clearly this is not the fast God wants. To loose the bonds of injustice, to let the oppressed go free and to share with the hungry — this is what God desires. This sustains my efforts for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender equality because I see this work as fitting under what God desires here. I work hard at these fasts each day. What fasts are you choosing right now?
And your healing shall spring up quickly;
Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer;
You shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am. Amen.
